 MAY FLIES
Picture
This method of presentation is called high stick nymphing.  The nymph is weighted with either a bead head, lead in the body, or a split shot on the line 18"-24" above the nymph.  This method is used predominantly in runs and riffles to present a nymph in the drift to waiting fish.

May Flies, from the order Ephemeroptera  come in all shapes and sizes. They have an incomplete life cycle, unlike the Midges and Caddis.  This means that there is no Pupae stage, per say.  These insects have been around here on earth for a very long time and have developed differently to cope with different environments.  Like the other aquatic insects, the mayfly starts off as an egg, that develops into a nymph.  There are 4 different types of nymphs.  Swimmers, Borrowers, Clingers, and Crawlers.  Each body type suggests where they are fished.  Clingers and crawlers tend to hang out in faster water, where swimmers like the relative calm of the leading edge of the pool, just after the run comes in.  Bringing up the rear is the borrower, digging into the silt at the end of the bottom of the pool, just before it picks up speed again on exit.

Indicators:  These are highly visible patterns that are usually fished in conjunction with a dropper in a tandem rig set up.  As seen here, the top fly is an indicator and the bottom, or dropper is a nymph bouncing on the bottom.

 STONE FLIES
Stone-flies, from the order Plecoptera, are like mayflies in that they have an incomplete metamorphosis.  There is a nymph stage and an adult stage. Golden Stones, Giant Black Stones, Little Black Stones, and Yellow Sallies are the four most common flies representing the more than 3500 species of stone fly in North America.

Dragonfly Life Cycle
Dragonflies are in the Order Odonata.  They have a similar life cycle to the mayflies and stone flies, as they have an incomplete metamorphosis, also.  Once the nymph hatches from its egg, it can spend as much as 4 years in that state.  Dragonfly nymphs are carnivorous, preying on all manner of aquatic invertebrates, and some small fish.  The nymph stage completes its development in the later part of the winter of its last year and emerges in the spring.  It breaks out of its exoskeleton (shuck) and sprouts its wings, to fly off.  The adults are carnivorous also.
